Knockout round up: Ormskirk carry the flag as Bootle lose in Durham
Sunday 12th July 2009
Whilst Ormskirk coasted through to the last eight of the ECB Club Championship with an emphatic nine wicket win over Leyland, Bootle's dream of a National final was put on hold for yet another year after a humiliatingly crushing 188 run defeat at Chester le Street, who now entertain Ormskirk in the last eight in three week's time as the Brook Lane club bid to reach the semi final stage for the second time in their history.
Leyland chose to bat and, after losing an early wicket, took the score to 102-4 with Wes Royle hitting 41. Two quick wickets by Simon Kerrigan, who finished with amazing figures 0f 9-5-8-3, led to a collapse which saw the last six wickets fall for 33. Ormskirk responded with a solid opening partnership of 79 before Matty Glayzer fell for 29 but his partner Ian Robinson with 80 from 83 balls with 12x4s and 2x6s saw it through with Ian Glayzer adding an unbeaten 22. scorecard
After winning the toss and deciding to bowl, Bootle started well with two Chester le Street batsmen back in the hutch with only 14 on the board. Two more wickets fell as the score advanced to 96 when Simon Birtwisle fell for 34. But then disaster began to strike as Tony Birbeck joined an already settled in Richard Waite. The two then added 134 before Birbeck was run out by David Snellgrove for 38 off 52 balls. Meanwhile Waite continued his assault on the Bootle bowling before being out last out at 256-6 with a personal contribution of 152 from 143 balls with 11x4s and 1x6. The innings closed shortly later on 269-6 after 45 overs. In reply, Bootle never got to grips with having to chase such a large total and collapsed to 81 all out in 27.3 overs with Andrew Bell taking 3-13. scorecard
Wallasey progressed to the third round of the Business Assistance Knockout Trophy with a 3 wicket win against Colwyn Bay at the Oval. The Bay lost two early wickets but Sion Morris (34) and Nathan Rimmington (54) added 80 for the third wicket. The innings closed at 196-6 with John Murphy picking up 5-35. Wallasey were 22-3 and then 93-5 before John Pugh (33) and Chris Bourne (58*) added 58 to help them on their way to 201-7 after 39.1 overs. scorecard
Northern's misery continued with a defeat at Orrell Red Triangle after asking the home side to bat first. Captain Chris Riley (68) added 99 for the second wicket with Zahoor Elahi (59) in a total of 239-8. Northern's new recruit, Travis Townsend, took 3-47. Northern's reply started badly with three wickets falling for 16. Townsend tried to steer the innings but kept on losing partners and was last out for 99 (103 balls, 13x4s, 1x6) at a final total of 172 after 39.4 overs. scorecard
Liverpool went to Skelmersdale on a high after yesterday's demolition of Highfield but things didn't work out as planned as the home side added 134 for the third wicket through Mike Till (83) and Andy Molyneux (59) on the way to 206-6. The visitors struggled in reply before reaching 153 in 39.3 overs. scorecard
Rainhill met Leigh for the second time in 24 hours and won by 1 wicket with an over to spare. Losing an over each through rain, Leigh totalled 225-7 with Karl Brown leading the way with 91. Rainhill struggled but Paul Ford saw it through with an unbeaten 63. scorecard
Lytham bowled Rainford out for 93 with Jimmy Wisniwski taking 4-12 and Rhys Williams 3-23. Joe Davies (41) and Simon Long (34*) gave the Fylde side victory after 22.3 overs. scorecard
