Ormskirk's rising star
Friday 10th July 2009

It's been a busy week for Ormskirk's 20 year old paceman Nick Caunce.

Last Saturday he took 3-19 in the 8 wicket defeat of New Brighton. Then it was a trip to Mansfield Woodhouse on Sunday and 2-23 in the ill feted Competition match against the Nottinghamshire Premier League.

Back up the motorway and to Rake Lane on Monday for the second demolition of New Brighton in the Liverpool Echo Knockout where he took 3-18.

Then to crown it all, Caunce made an outstanding 2nd XI Championship début on Wednesday for Lancashire against Worcestershire at Trafalgar Road, ending with figures of 5-84 and 4-62.

In the match report on the Lancashire CCC website it states: 1st day . . . . "Nick Caunce, on his championship début, took the new ball with great affect to end the visitors innings and finish with  5 for 84 from 25 overs."

3rd day:  . . "Four more wickets fell in the afternoon session, Caunce impressing on début with a third wicket . . . . . . Caunce struck with the new ball taking a sharp catch from his own bowling to end the innings on 208 leaving Lancashire to get 28 in the last hour."

NICK CAUNCE

Introduced to Ormskirk as a 15 year old from the obscurity of Rufford's 3rd XI by the late Nick Glayzer, Nick Caunce joined the club in 2005 and played briefly in the 3rd XI but it wasn't long before he was promoted to the 2nd XI.

In 2006, newly appointed Ormskirk captain, Adam Waterhouse recognised his potential and gave him his 1st XI début at Lytham on 6th May.

Previously being used sparingly because of the age related bowling restrictions, Caunce, now that he can bowl longer spells, is quickly developing in a powerful opening bowler and, in 78 1st XI league matches to date, has taken 113 wickets at an average of 20.89 with a best bowling figures of 5-16 against Lytham and 5-37 at Maghull in 2008.

He is also developing into a dependable late order batsman as he showed with match winning knocks in recent cup matches where he hit 41* (20 balls, 4x4s. 3x6s) at Hyde and 36 against Greenmount.
