Wallasey lift Premier League Knockout Trophy
Sunday 15th August 2004

Wallasey lifted what may be their only trophy of the season when they defeated arch rivals Bootle by 10 runs in the final of Premier League Knockout Trophy, delayed from earlier in the season.

Wallasey chose to bat at Wadham Road and were in trouble at 34-4 but a partnership of 111 between Paul Strang (45) and captain Phil Luxon (76) brought a recovery to enable them to end their innings at 180-8 after 45 overs.

Bootle had a worse start to their innings being 5-3 after Nick Doggett nailed Paddy McKeown lbw for 0 and left arm seamer, Paul Thistlewaite, sent Chris Sainsbury and David Snellgrove back to the pavilion without scoring.

Ian Cockbain jnr (19) added 64 with Graham Lloyd before being bowled by Paul Strang. John Hitchmough went for 19 at 121-5 when Ian Cockbain snr joined Lloyd. The two added a further 21 before Cockbain tragically ran out Lloyd, who had made 79 and was looking like winning the match for Bootle.

From 142-6, a further 28 runs were added for the loss of the remaining wickets to leave the Wadham Road side a deficit of 10 runs with two wickets apiece for Thistlewaite, Strang, Luxon and Chris Bourne.
