first win for Competition U15 XI
Mike Leddy -
Wednesday 4th August 2004
The Liverpool Competition U15 XI won its first group match, away to Southport and District League at Burscough earlier today.
Despite heavy overnight rain, a prompt start was made. The Liverpool Competition won the toss and inserted the home side.
Opening bowlers, Darren Bell (Lytham) and Owain Stratton (Ormskirk) tied them down to 17 off the first 10 overs. They were then replaced by Dave Hort and Peter Kelly (both Sefton Park) who were also economical.
After 30 overs, Southport and District had only reached 68 for 3, although they managed to double their score from their last 15 overs to close on 136 for 9. Hort finished with 4 for 33 from 9 overs, whilst Steve Cole (Northern) took 3 for 28. Kelly did not take a wicket but only conceded 19 runs from his 9 overs.
In reply, Matthew Jackson (Liverpool) and Cole made a steady start, scoring 32 from 12 overs before Cole was caught for 15.
Luke Connolly (Huyton) then came in and helped add 34 with Jackson, second out for 36, and 36 with Jon Glayzer, who scored 9.
After Connolly was bowled for top score of 38 with the total on 110, Nick Little (Lytham) and Kris Jones (Formby) finished unbeaten on 18 and 11 respectively as the target was passed with 13 balls to spare.
A special thank you is offered to the parents and friends who came along to support the team and also to young Josh Stratton, who turned out at the last minute following a late cry off and took a good catch.
The South Moorland League has withdrawn from this group and the LDCC now faces games against the Lancashire County and Saddleworth leagues next week.
