President's Trophy -
Competition XI wins at Grappenhall
Sunday 1st August 2004
The Competition XI continued its unbeaten run in the Northern Rock League Cricket Conference President's Trophy when it defeated the Cheshire County League by five wickets at Broad Lane, Grappenhall in a third round match postponed from last Sunday.
The Cheshire County League, captained by former Lancashire and Derbyshire batsman, Steve Titchard chose to bat. With Jeff Maynard top scoring with 73 and R Sen 30, the CCL reached 183-8 from their 45 overs, Phil Luxon taking 3-39 from his 10 overs and John Murphy 2-11 from 7 overs.
James Dyer and Craig Prince gave the Competition a solid start with a stand of 62 before Prince was stumped for a useful 31. Dyer's dismissal for 63 at 108 sparked off a mini collapse as Liam Crilly went for 11 and Neil Rimmer was run out for 1.
Suddenly 108-1 had become 109-4. Martyn Evans joined John Pugh and took the score to 140 before he was caught by former Liverpool spinner, 'Bapa' Mukherjee, for 11.
Captain Phil Luxon then joined Pugh and scored the bulk of the sixth wicket partnership with 33* out of 46 as the Competition side reached 186-5 with nine balls remaining.
The side now travels to Denby Dale CC to take on the Derbyshire County League in a semi final tie on Sunday 15th August.
